Split shift

On a work schedule, a split shift is a workday broken into two parts with an unpaid gap between them that is longer than a normal meal break.

Also called: split-shift

What does a split shift look like at events?

A server works a conference breakfast from 6 to 10 am, goes home, then comes back for the evening reception from 5 to 10 pm. The gap between 10 am and 5 pm is unpaid, so the day is a split shift.

Do you get paid extra for a split shift?

Federal law doesn't require extra pay for split shifts, but some states do. California, for example, adds an extra hour of pay at minimum wage in many cases. Check your state labor department's rules, and ask the employer before you accept the booking.

Split shift vs double shift

A double is two shifts back to back with only a meal break between them. A split shift has a long unpaid gap in the middle of the day.
